Purchasing an outdoor foam replacement for your seat cushions is a great way to extend the life of your pieces and make them more comfortable. You can enhance the quality of your replacement foam by making sure that you are doing it right. Here are three things you should be doing to get the most out of your outdoor foam replacements:
Choose the right material. The type of outdoor foam that you select will largely be dependent on how it will be used. For example, if you are looking for a foam to be used as a cushion in a patio chair’s seat back, you can get away with a lighter and softer material such as polyester fiberfill. However, if the material needs to be used for the actual seat, you will want a denser and more durable type of foam such as a polyurethane foam.
Use batting to soften the cushion. You can have a soft cushion even if you need to use a stiff and dense material such as closed cell foam as your primary material. The trick is to use batting and wrap it around the outside of your core foam material, adhering the two layers together with a spray adhesive. This is a great choice for outdoor furniture cushions such as a lounge chair that needs to be comfortable and soft while also being durable.
Create an extra layer of moisture protection. Even if you are using a type of foam that is resistant to damage from water, it’s a good idea to wrap your foam with an additional layer of protection. This can come in the form of batting or in a silk film cushion wrap, which is a noiseless layer that looks similar to plastic. It also allows you the ability to vacuum out air from the foam so it can be more easily placed inside of a cover.
