Who doesn’t love a pumpkin-adorned porch? Whether you have a covered back porch or a small portico in the front of your home, autumn is a gorgeous season to decorate and enjoy your porch. Autumn evokes fond memories of walking across crunchy piles of leaves and the aroma of bonfires and apple pies.
Sprucing up your back porch in the autumn is a natural way of cozying-up to the cooler, crisper temperatures that autumn brings. Your back porch affords you a few more liberties than what you might do with your front porch. Because your back porch is more secluded than the front, you can put out more cherished treasures.
Start with some buttery-soft fleece throws with an autumn theme. Toss them over your porch furniture or porch swing. Add some pretty corduroy-covered pillows in browns, golds and rust. Nothing like sitting on your back porch on a chilly morning all snuggled up in a soft fleece wrap. Do you enjoy your porch in the evening, too? Have you seen those outdoor tabletop fireplaces? They are not only romantic but also very functional on a chilly evening with your sweetie or family.
Autumn is a great time to decorate your porch with natural items. Set out a few pumpkins and bales of straw. Add in some colorful mums and you have autumn-in-an-instant. But there’s no need to stop there. How about the charming autumn artwork and coloring pages your children or grandchildren bring home from school? Create a nice display on your porch with simple black frames. Your children will appreciate that you cared enough and your porch will be that much more colorful and love-filled.
Here’s an idea for your pumpkins this year.
- Get some puffy paint at a craft store
- Paint puffy dots onto your pumpkins. The dots could form the outline of a geometric shape, your monogram or just all-over dots. Or they could outline the natural lines on the pumpkin, too.
- After the puffy dots are dry, then spray paint your pumpkins – orange, yellow or gold. Or choose a non-traditional autumn color – like aqua! You’ll love the texture that the dots bring to the pumpkin. (Idea found on YoungHouseLove.)
Here’s another autumn decorating idea for your back porch or back yard.
- Place a generous layer of straw inside your wheelbarrow or a bushel basket
- Then add several pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, bittersweet or a colorful leaf garland.
- Voila! Instant charm using what you already have.
A back porch is a place where families and friends love to gather. Warm cups of cinnamon-spiced cider, several snuggly fleece throws and your favorite autumn treasures will make memories for your family. Even though your life is busy beyond belief, allow yourself to enjoy the splendor of autumn.
Life is short. Enjoy your porch. Cherish your friends and family.
